MARCH - NATIONAL QUILTING MONTH

National Quilting Month Happenings
In Catawba County

The Catawba Valley Quilters Guild was recently called upon to provide a quilt display in connection with the local production of the musical Quilters, which was presented in April by The Green Room Community Theatre located in Newton.  The display was hung in the lobby of the Theatre for the three-week duration of the musical.
The musical depicted the lives of American pioneer women, their challenges and the realities of their lives on the frontier.  A focal quilt hung as part of the CVQG quilt display included one made by member, Joyce Pearce, from antique feed sacks.  Her quilt was enhanced with yo-yo’s and buttons, tied on to the quilt with the original string ties from the feed sacks.
Quilts a part of the CVQG display included both hand and machine-quilted ones and ranged in size from miniatures to king size and were all made by Guild members.
The Green Room Community Theatre collaborated with the Catawba County Museum of History and the Catawba County Library to bring focus to the art of quilting during the month of March, which was National Quilting Month.  The Museum had an exhibition of antique quilts, while the Library hosted a trunk show and presentation by Georgia Bonesteel, well-known teacher, author, and quilter.
