FAMILY GUIDANCE CENTER RECEIVES SPECIAL CHRISTMAS GIFTS 2010
Catawba Valley Quilters Guild Community Project
Provides Christmas Gift of Genuine Warmth

For nearly a year, members of the Catawba Valley Quilters Guild have been working diligently on one of their biggest community projects to date.  Their undertaking has been to make quilts for all of the permanent beds at the Family Crisis Center of Catawba County.  The project yielded a total of nineteen quilts, and at the December 10 Guild meeting, the quilts were shown and formally presented to Ann Peele, Director of the Family Guidance Center.
After discussing the work of the Crisis Center with Guild members, Peele accepted the gift of the quilts from Guild president, Martha Pendasulo and project chairperson, Barbara Phillips.
Funding for this community project came in part from the North Carolina Quilt Symposium, the Hickory American Legion, money raised from the 2009 “opportunity quilt” made by the Guild for the 2009 Quilts of the Valley quilt show, and individual Guild members.
Guild members volunteered in teams of two or three to cut and make the twin size quilt tops and then to add the binding once each was quilted.  Team members and the quilt patterns were as follows:  Suzanne Sproul and Lavina Smith (Scrappy Split Nine-Patch); Wilma Brewer and Kathryn Hodges (A Trip to the Golden West); Barbara Huggins and Jennifer Kay (Double Four-Patch); Judi Eller and Kandi Peterson (Lucky Stars); Kathleen Sigmon and Barbara Phillips (Autumn Leaves); Libby Sigmon and Rhonda Hargenrader (Nine-Patch in a Square); Gere Helton and Mary LePage (Morning Star); Martha Pendasulo and Sherry Huffman (Scrappy Nine-Patch); Joyce Pearce, Janice Setzler and Linda Tatum (Rail Fence); Melissa Shaw and Candi Gordon (Lewis and Clark Expedition); Pat Carson and Carol McRee (Sun Peeking Through); Charlotte Hyde and Cindy Williams (Follow the Brick Road); Mary Whipkey and Karen Hacker (Houses); Jan Carpenter and Pat Allen (Purplelicious); Mary Ann Logan, Mary Grobleski, and Jennie Cook (Trade Winds); Martha Pendasulo and Jean Gardiner (Rail Fence Puzzle); Barbara Huggins and Kitty Barco (Navy Sampler); and, Barbara Huggins made a third quilt (When I Wish Upon a Star) working alone.  Lavina Smith also donated a quilt to the project.
Suzanne Sproul and Lavina Smith quilted two of the quilts, while the remainder of the nineteen project quilts was quilted by The Quilting Solution of Taylorsville, NC.
For several years, Guild members have made and donated on a continuing monthly basis, Sunshine quilts and pillowcases to the Family Guidance Center.  These are given to children in crisis and to women and children as they are eventually able to leave the Crisis Center and establish a safe residence.
Especially for the December meeting, Guild members also collectively gathered personal toiletry and baby care items as a special Christmas gift for the Family Guidance Center.
